Pritzker campaign responds after Trump visit
(The Center Square) – After President Donald Trump said inflation is going down following his visit to Illinois over the weekend, Democrats in the state expressed their disagreement.
Trump awarded the winning U.S. golf team the President’s Cup trophy at Medinah Country Club on Sunday.
After his return from Illinois to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday night, the president said prices are going down, with the exception of oil.
“We inherited the worst inflation in the history of our country, and it’s going really down,” Trump said.
Trump said the country is doing well.
“401(k)s are at their all-time high. The stock markets are at their all-time high,” Trump said.
In a statement provided to The Center Square, a spokesperson for Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s campaign said Trump is not tethered to reality.
“Instead of coming to Illinois and spreading lies, he should focus on delivering the lower costs he promised,” the spokesperson said.
Pritzker’s lieutenant governor candidate, Christian Mitchell, joined several Democratic state lawmakers at a campaign event in Bloomington on Monday.
State Sen. Dave Koehler, D-Peoria, criticized the Trump administration for cutting health care and eduction funding.
“Go by the gas pumps and we see the prices rise, we go to the grocery store and we see the prices rise. Thank goodness we’ve done a deal with Greenland,” Koehler said.
On Sunday night, a reporter asked Trump if Pritzker called to congratulate him on the President’s Cup win or if he had heard from the governor at all.
“No, no, no. I didn’t hear from him,” Trump said.
The president offered praise for the golf course in Medinah.
“The job they did of conditioning and everything else was amazing, so I want to congratulate all of the people that are members at Medinah. They did a great job,” Trump said.
