(The Center Square) – Caterpillar Inc. has announced plans to invest about $1 billion in North Carolina to expand manufacturing capacity and build a new facility in Sanford.

Caterpillar said North Carolina was selected because of the company’s longstanding presence in the state, the strength of the local workforce and the opportunity to build on existing manufacturing expertise and operations in Sanford.

Caterpillar was based in Illinois from 1925 to 2022, when the company moved its corporate headquarters to Texas.

STATE AGENCY RETURNS LIFE INSURANCE FUNDS

The Illinois Department of Insurance has announced the return of $9.3 million to consumers this year through its service for lost or unclaimed life insurance policies and annuities.

Under Illinois law, insurance companies must attempt to find the beneficiaries of deceased policyholders when life insurance or annuity proceeds remain unpaid.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners reports that millions of dollars in life insurance benefits remain unclaimed each year.

CHICAGO RECOVERS UNPAID PPLT DOLLARS

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson says his administration has recovered $32.2 million in unpaid personal property lease transaction tax funds from two scofflaw corporations.

A statement from the mayor’s office said the collections were the result of the city finance department’s work to identify significant gaps in tax receipts.

FOOTBALL GAMES ARE BACK ON AFTER CPS PAYS OFFICIALS

Chicago Public League football games are back on for this weekend after some were previously slated for cancellation.

In a statement to the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Public Schools said the district worked with the vendor that manages payments to referees and expedited efforts to ensure compensation for sports officials who were not paid in a timely manner.

Several officials refused assignments because CPS failed to pay them for dozens of games worked in recent weeks.

FOREIGN NATIONAL GETS 20 YEARS FOR DRUG DISTRIBUTION IN ST. LOUIS

A foreign national who distributed cocaine in St. Louis for a Mexican cartel has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Jose Luis Mata Cedillo, 40, pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, illegal reentry after deportation as an aggravated felon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors said Mata Cedillo was in the U.S. illegally and was living in St. Louis under someone else’s name at the time of his arrest.
