(The Center Square) – Chicago officials have announced that the city will pay $260.8 million to resolve 16 misconduct lawsuits against former Chicago Police Department Detective Reynaldo Guevara.

The suits were brought by 17 individuals whose murder convictions were later vacated and involve allegations of misconduct from the 1980s and 1990s.

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office said the settlement could save city taxpayers up to $400 million in potential exposure with trial verdicts, attorney fees and defense costs.

TAXPAYERS SUPPORT $65.8 MILLION CHICAGO HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

Chicago officials have cut the ribbon on a $65.8 million development of 99 mixed-income homes on the city’s Near North Side.

Parkside Phase 5 was funded by $16.4 million in tax increment financing and up to $4.25 million in multi-family program funds from the city’s housing department.

The Chicago Housing Authority provided about $32.5 million, including an $11.5 million capital loan and about $21 million in projected operating subsidies over 20 years for the 37 homes that are CHA-assisted.

ECONOMIC POLICY INSTITUTE SAYS DATA CENTERS WILL BOOST ECONOMY

According to a new study by the Illinois Economic Policy Institute and the Project for Middle Class Renewal at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Illinois data center investments are expected to generate almost $300 million per year in property tax revenues over the next decade.

The report says public concerns around utility costs and other development impacts can be mitigated by policy guardrails and project design standards.

AG DEPARTMENT SEEKS WHEAT BOARD MEMBERS

The Illinois Department of Agriculture says an election will be on Oct. 28 for two board members in Illinois Wheat Development Board districts three and six as well as one statewide at-large board member.

IDOA said Thursday that no formal petitions were filed for the vacant positions, so qualified wheat producers may participate as write-in candidates.
