Richardson’s 16 Kills Power Marshall Past Paris in 2-1 Conference Win
MARSHALL, Ill. — Harper Richardson carried the Marshall attack from the opening serve, and the senior’s 16 kills were enough to send Paris home with a 2-1 conference loss on the road.
The Lions, now 18-8, leaned on efficiency in the three-set match. Marshall hit .224 as a team against Paris’ .137, converting 33 kills on 98 swings while committing only 11 attack errors. Paris, which fell to 22-7, matched the Lions in volume with 38 kills but gave back 22 errors in 117 attempts.
Richardson was the centerpiece. She took 44 of Marshall’s 98 swings — nearly half the team’s offense — and made just one attack error, finishing at .341 with a kill on 36.4 percent of her attempts. She also chipped in eight assists, nine digs, three total blocks and two aces for 10 service points, a full line from the Lions’ most-used hitter.
Sophomore setter Lillian Ross ran the offense with 16 assists and was the Lions’ most efficient attacker in her own right, hitting .375 on eight kills in 16 swings. She added 12 digs and a pair of block assists.
The serving line proved decisive. Marshall put 11 aces on the floor to Paris’ six, with senior Lauren English leading the way at four aces and a team-high 12 service points on 18 attempts. Mckenzie Davis added three aces and was a wall at the net, recording five total blocks — two solo, three assisted — to anchor a Marshall front line that finished with 10 blocks to Paris’ two. Ali Sheets was perfect on 11 serves and led all players with 15 digs.
Paris spread its offense more evenly. Pailynne Camp and Sadie Sallee each posted eight kills, with Sallee hitting .200 on 20 swings and Camp taking a team-high 28 attempts. Kailey Young delivered the Tigers’ most complete night, running the offense with 24 assists while adding seven kills on .353 hitting, 12 digs, two aces and a team-best 13 service points. Nora Adams also finished with seven kills.
In the back row, Sara Staley gave Paris a steady floor presence with 13 digs, 13 serve receptions and a perfect 16-for-16 night from the service line that produced two aces and nine points. Alyssa Martin handled 15 receptions and dug out eight balls, and Camp added eight digs of her own.
The difference came down to margins — the Lions’ block, the ace count and Richardson’s near-flawless swing total. Marshall’s ability to side out behind Richardson and Ross in the deciding set kept the Tigers from closing out a match they had pushed to the limit.
