Cornwell’s 10 Strikeouts Power Marshall Softball Past Oakwood 2-1
Senior Avery Cornwell tossed a complete-game gem with 10 strikeouts, guiding the Marshall varsity softball team to a tight 2-1 non-conference road victory over Oakwood on Thursday afternoon.
The matchup featured a classic pitchers’ duel between Cornwell and Oakwood’s Irene Rangel, with both starters going the distance and keeping offensive opportunities to a bare minimum. Rangel was stellar for the hosts, allowing just four hits and two earned runs while striking out six over seven innings.
After two scoreless frames, Marshall broke the deadlock in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Lilly Nickles provided the spark, launching a solo home run to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.
Marshall manufactured what would prove to be the game-winning run in the fourth inning. Junior Lauren English ripped a triple to get into scoring position, and junior McKenzie Davis immediately cashed in the opportunity, lifting a sacrifice fly to the outfield to bring English home and extend the lead to 2-0. Junior Klaire York also contributed a double to the Lions’ attack, though she was ultimately left stranded.
Armed with a two-run cushion, Cornwell continued to cruise through the Oakwood lineup. She scattered just three hits and three walks over her 101-pitch outing, maintaining a shutout deep into the contest.
Oakwood mounted a dramatic late rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. After C. Vermillion drew a walk to put a runner aboard, Gracie Hanner stepped to the plate and laced an RBI double to cut the Marshall lead to 2-1. However, Cornwell beared down and quickly slammed the door, executing under pressure to strand the tying run and secure the hard-fought victory.
Offensively for Oakwood, Rangel helped her own cause with a perfect 2-for-3 day at the plate, collecting two of her team’s three total hits.
