The Marshall varsity softball team unleashed a staggering 17-hit offensive attack to overpower host Salt Fork 15-5 in a six-inning, non-conference matchup on Friday afternoon.

Senior Avery Cornwell was the undisputed star of the game, delivering a dominant performance both at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle. Offensively, Cornwell launched a home run and finished the day 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. She backed up her own run production on the mound, tossing a complete six innings to earn the victory. Cornwell scattered 12 Salt Fork hits and limited the damage to four earned runs while striking out six batters and issuing three walks.

The middle of the Marshall lineup proved impossible for Salt Fork to navigate. Junior Klaire York matched Cornwell’s run-producing output, driving in four runs of her own during a stellar 3-for-4 afternoon that included a pair of doubles.

Junior Lauren English was the offensive sparkplug at the top of the lineup. She was nearly perfect in the batter’s box, going 4-for-5 to set the table all afternoon. English crossed the plate four times and stole a base to keep constant pressure on the Salt Fork defense.

The hits kept coming throughout the Marshall roster. Junior McKenzie Davis went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while senior Lynn Welborn ripped a double as part of a 2-for-4 performance, driving in a run and scoring three times herself. Sophomore Lilly Nickles and senior C. Hilliard each chipped in a hit to keep the basepaths crowded.

Salt Fork managed to plate five runs on 12 hits against Cornwell, but the home team simply could not keep pace with Marshall’s relentless scoring. The Lions’ overwhelming offensive depth triggered the mercy rule after six innings, securing a decisive road victory.
