Junior McKenzie Davis launched a home run as part of a perfect 4-for-4 afternoon, and junior Kyla Gustafson dominated in the circle with 13 strikeouts to lead the Marshall varsity softball team to a 14-2, five-inning victory over Hutsonville/Palestine on Thursday.

Gustafson was virtually unhittable over her five innings of work. The junior right-hander faced just 20 batters, striking out 13 of them to account for nearly every recorded out. She allowed only one walk and surrendered just two hits the entire afternoon. Both hits came off the bat of Hutsonville/Palestine freshman K. Alumbaugh, who accounted for all of the visitors’ offense with a two-run double and a perfect 2-for-2 performance.

Marshall’s offense backed up their ace with a 13-hit barrage, scoring in all four innings they stepped to the plate. After Hutsonville/Palestine pushed a single run across in the top of the first inning, Marshall answered immediately with a four-run explosion in the bottom half. The Lions then blew the game wide open in the second, sending five runs across the plate to build a commanding 9-1 advantage.

Davis was the engine of the Lions’ lineup. In addition to her home run, she tallied a double, scored three runs, and drove in three to anchor the early scoring surge. Junior Klaire York provided the biggest single swing of the game with a home run of her own, driving in a team-high five runs while going 2-for-3.

Gustafson helped her own cause in the batter’s box, matching her dominance in the circle with a flawless 3-for-3 day at the plate that included a double and two RBIs. Senior Avery Cornwell also enjoyed a multi-hit outing, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Marshall added a single run in the third inning and polished off the afternoon with a four-run fourth, maintaining their relentless offensive pressure to trigger the mercy rule and secure the decisive home victory.
