Marshall Survives Mattoon’s Late Surge to Secure 4-3 Road Win
The Marshall varsity softball team held off a fierce late-game comeback by host Mattoon on Wednesday afternoon, escaping with a narrow 4-3 non-conference victory. Marshall capitalized on defensive miscues and pushed across a decisive, game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and secure the road win.
Marshall struck early to take command of the game. After a scoreless first inning, the visitors manufactured a three-run second frame. Mattoon’s defense struggled to find its footing, committing three errors throughout the contest that proved incredibly costly.
Despite the defensive struggles behind her, Mattoon freshman starting pitcher Layla Cole kept her team in the game with a gritty performance in the circle. Cole pitched a complete game, navigating through traffic and working around five walks. Of the four runs she surrendered, only one was earned, keeping the Mattoon offense within striking distance.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, Mattoon finally broke through against Marshall senior starter Avery Cornwell. The home team scratched across their first run to cut the deficit to 3-1. The momentum carried into the sixth inning, where Mattoon’s bats came alive to plate two critical runs, tying the game at 3-3 and setting the stage for a dramatic seventh frame.
Under pressure, Marshall’s offense answered the bell. The visitors managed to push across the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to reclaim a 4-3 advantage.
In the bottom half of the inning, Cornwell slammed the door. The senior right-hander finished off a stellar complete-game performance, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out six Mattoon batters to earn the win.
Offensively, senior Lynn Welborn was a catalyst for Marshall, finishing with a perfect 2-for-2 day at the plate that included a double, a triple, and two walks. Senior Ella Mattas also delivered a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
For Mattoon, junior Kynlee McGraw paced the lineup, tallying two hits and scoring a run in three at-bats. Sophomore Alana Perez provided the power, driving in two runs on a double, while Cole helped her own cause at the plate with an RBI double of her own.
