Richardson’s 7 Aces, 10 Kills Carry Marshall Past Robinson in Straight Sets

MARSHALL, Ill. — Harper Richardson served Robinson off the floor Friday, piling up seven aces and a match-high 10 kills as the Marshall Lions swept the visiting Maroons 2-0 in conference play at Marshall High School.

The senior outside hitter was the difference in a match Robinson could never settle into. Richardson went 16-for-16 from the service line — scoring on nearly half of those attempts — and finished with 12 service points, more than three times the total of any Robinson player. She added 10 digs and eight assists for a four-category stat line that touched every phase of the match.

Marshall, now 18-8, got the balance it needed around her. Sophomore setter Lillian Ross distributed 14 assists while hitting .333 with seven kills on 15 swings, and she led the Lions at the net with two block assists. Junior Ali Sheets anchored the back row in serve receive, handling a team-high 18 attempts with just two errors, and chipped in two aces, five digs and seven points of her own.

The Lions’ service pressure was the story statistically. Marshall finished with 12 aces to Robinson’s four, and the Maroons’ passing never fully recovered — the difference showed up in Robinson’s attack, which managed just 15 kills on 61 swings for a .082 hitting percentage against Marshall’s .181.

Robinson, which falls to 12-10, did get a strong night from senior Eva Brashear. The Maroons’ most efficient attacker hit .385 with seven kills on 13 attempts, converting better than half her swings into terminations, and backed it with eight digs and a perfect 6-for-6 night serving. Junior Grace Miller supplied four kills, three aces and six digs, and senior Macee Hammond led all Maroons with nine digs.

Senior setter Sicily Rawlings ran the Robinson offense with 10 assists on 43 ball-handling attempts without an error, and sophomore Harper Weck added four assists in a single set of work. Clean hands weren’t the problem for the Maroons — Robinson committed zero ball-handling errors as a team. Finding a reliable second scoring option alongside Brashear was.

Marshall closed it out in two sets without ever surrendering control, pulling the Lions 10 games above .500 as the regular season winds down. Robinson returns home needing to steady its serve receive, which absorbed 12 Marshall aces across just two sets.
