Richardson and Ross Power Marshall Past Red Hill in Straight Sets
MARSHALL, Ill. — Harper Richardson hammered eight kills on .500 hitting and Lillian Ross ran the offense while serving up six aces as the Marshall Lions swept the visiting Red Hill Salukis 2-0 in non-conference volleyball action.
The Lions were efficient from the first serve to the last. Marshall put away 17 kills on 47 swings with only five attack errors, a .255 team clip, and backed it with 13 service aces against just four service errors across 49 attempts — a serve-and-terminate formula that never let Red Hill settle into a rhythm.
Richardson, a senior, was the most complete player on the floor. She led the match with eight kills on 14 swings with a single error, added four aces on nine serve attempts, dished five assists, dug six balls and was in on three blocks. Ross, the sophomore setter, matched her impact in a different way, distributing a team-high nine assists while putting down five kills of her own on 13 attempts and leading all servers with six aces in 11 trips to the line. Richardson and Ross each accounted for a team-best eight and seven service points, respectively, with Ross’s eight tying senior Lauren English for the match high.
English anchored the back row and the net at the same time. She logged a team-high eight digs, added six serve receptions, served two aces without an error and was the Lions’ top blocker with two solo stuffs and two assisted blocks for four total. Marshall combined for 11 individual blocks on the night, a number that made life difficult for Red Hill on the outside.
Senior Ellie Delp chipped in two kills, an ace and two digs while handling seven serves without a miss. Junior Ali Sheets was steady in serve receive, handling a team-high nine passes without an error and adding six digs. Senior Nya Engledow contributed two digs and two receptions off the bench in the defensive rotation, while senior Mckenzie Davis added a kill, two digs and a block and freshman Libby Huisinga supplied a kill and a block.
The win moved Marshall to 18-8 on the season. Red Hill fell to 4-13.
