Marshall’s Balanced Attack Sweeps Edwards County 2-0 in Tournament Play
Marshall rode a balanced hitting attack and a steady back row to a 2-0 sweep of Edwards County in neutral-site tournament play on Sept. 12, holding the Lions of Edwards County to 10 kills across the two sets while posting 24 of its own.
The difference showed up most clearly at the net. Marshall hit .231 as a team, converting 24 kills on 65 swings with just nine attack errors, while Edwards County finished in the red at minus-.110 on 10 kills, 18 errors and 73 attempts. In a two-set match, that kind of efficiency gap rarely leaves room for a comeback.
Senior Harper Richardson carried the heaviest load for Marshall, hammering eight kills on 28 attempts while also running the offense with a match-high 11 assists and adding five digs and a block assist. Sophomore Lillian Ross was the most efficient hitter on the floor, putting away seven kills on 12 swings without an error for a .583 clip, and she doubled as a setter with nine assists. Ross was everywhere defensively as well, leading all players with 14 digs and finishing with three total blocks, including the match’s only solo stuff.
Senior Mckenzie Davis chipped in five kills on 12 attempts, and senior Ellie Delp added four kills at a 40 percent clip. Junior Ali Sheets anchored the serve receive with 16 receptions and no errors, dug out nine balls and led Marshall’s service effort with two aces on 14 attempts without a miss. Freshman Libby Huisinga contributed two block assists and an ace off the bench rotation.
Edwards County got its best offensive work from junior Madison Miller, who led her team with six kills on 19 swings. Senior Ashlyn Weaver added two kills and was the Lions’ most effective presence at the net with three block assists, while sophomore Tenley West had two block assists of her own. Junior Katie Robb handled the setting duties, distributing nine assists on 52 ball-handling attempts without an error, and she also delivered six digs, a kill and an ace.
The Edwards County defense kept the Lions in rallies even as the offense struggled to finish. Senior Braelyn Troyer led the team with 11 digs, added seven serve receptions and served up an ace, while junior Laney Knasinski and Robb each added an ace of their own. Senior Jackie Fritchley absorbed the brunt of Marshall’s serving pressure, taking 20 receptions with just one error, and she tacked on five digs and a kill. Sophomores Falon Richards and Hanna Evans added five and four digs, respectively.
Marshall’s service game provided the margin on the scoreboard, with six aces to Edwards County’s three and 25 service points charted from the back line. Sheets alone accounted for nine of those points.
The sweep moved Marshall to 18-8 on the season. Edwards County fell to 14-11.
