MARSHALL, Ill. — Harper Richardson pounded 14 kills and served four aces to lead host Marshall to a 2-1 non-conference volleyball win over Martinsville on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2026, sending the three-set match the Lions’ way behind a balanced front-row effort.

Marshall improved to 18-8 with the victory. Martinsville fell to 15-10.

The Lions won the match at the net and at the service line, the two areas where the margin was clearest. Marshall hit .186 as a team on 27 kills in 86 swings, compared with .096 for Martinsville, which finished with 24 kills but committed 16 attack errors in 83 attempts. Marshall also piled up 13 service aces against eight service errors, while the Bluestreaks managed five aces.

Richardson, a senior, was the most productive attacker on the floor. She converted 14 of her 31 swings into kills against just two errors for a .387 clip, a 45.2 kill percentage, and added six assists, two digs and a block assist. Her 13 service points led all players, and her four aces were the most by anyone in the match.

Sophomore setter Lillian Ross ran the Marshall offense and proved just as dangerous when she swung. Ross distributed 17 assists on 46 ball-handling attempts with one error, then hit .444 herself with nine kills on 18 attacks — a 50.0 kill percentage. She also recorded six block assists, the most in the match, and chipped in six digs and two aces.

The Lions’ blocking advantage was decisive. Marshall put up 12 total blocks to Martinsville’s four. Freshman Libby Huisinga added three blocks and two aces off the bench role at the net, while seniors Ellie Delp, Mckenzie Davis and Richardson each registered one.

In the back row, junior Ali Sheets handled the bulk of Marshall’s serve receive with 23 receptions and four errors, adding five digs, two aces and eight service points. Davis contributed six digs and three kills, and Delp added two aces, three digs and 10 swings.

Martinsville had answers, particularly from junior Hope Hammond, who led the Bluestreaks with eight kills on 15 attempts and hit .400 with a 53.3 kill percentage — the highest kill rate of any player with double-digit attempts in the match. Hammond also added two block assists, three digs, an ace and a team-high 83.3 serving percentage on six attempts.

Senior Trinity Simons gave Martinsville steady production on both sides of the net, posting five kills, a match-high 10 digs, 17 serve receptions and a 94.1 serving percentage on 17 attempts. Sophomore Charity Hammond added four kills and two block assists.

Senior libero Harper Baird anchored the Bluestreaks’ passing game with 32 receptions — more than any player on either roster — along with seven digs and two aces. Martinsville’s defense actually out-dug Marshall 50-30, but the Bluestreaks could not match the Lions’ efficiency in transition.

Martinsville split setting duties between junior Addison Mcdearmon, who dished seven assists with seven digs, and junior Molly Kannamacher, who added six assists, seven digs and two aces. Senior Bella Reed contributed five digs and junior Ezzy Herrera added three.

Sophomore Austyn Davidson swung 13 times for three kills but was charged with five errors, part of the attack-error total that kept Martinsville from closing the gap over the deciding set.
