MARSHALL, Ill. — Cara Hatton did a little of everything Wednesday night, and it was enough to send St. Anthony home with another win. The senior hammered 12 kills, dug out 10 balls and added two solo blocks and two aces as the Bulldogs outlasted Marshall 2-1 in a non-conference match on Sept. 17.

The victory moved St. Anthony to 24-3 on the season. Marshall, which pushed the match to a deciding set, fell to 18-8.

Hatton was the focal point of the St. Anthony offense from the opening serve, accounting for better than half of the Bulldogs’ recorded kills and averaging 6.0 per set. Setter Madelyn Gilmore kept her fed, distributing 15 assists while chipping in four kills of her own, four digs, an ace and a block.

The Bulldogs also won points before the ball ever crossed the net. St. Anthony served up 10 aces, led by Sophia Emmerich’s four from the service line. Hatton and junior Claire Kinkelaar added two apiece, with Colby Mccormick and Gilmore each picking up one. At the net, Hatton and Ali Kollmann posted two solo blocks each, giving the Bulldogs five total stuffs in a match where Marshall managed just one.

The Lions had plenty to build on. Sophomore Lillian Ross was the most efficient attacker on the floor, putting down 10 kills on 20 swings with only three errors for a .350 hitting percentage. Ross also served two aces, handed out eight assists and led Marshall with seven digs — a full-rotation performance that kept the home side in every exchange.

Senior Harper Richardson ran the Marshall offense with 13 assists while adding seven kills on 22 attempts, four digs and the Lions’ only block. Ellie Delp contributed four kills, five digs, an ace and a team-best 87.5 percent service accuracy, and Mckenzie Davis took the most trips to the line of anyone on the court, serving 13 times for seven points with an ace.

Marshall’s back row was busy all night, and it showed in the dig column, where the Lions piled up 38. Lauren English and Davis each had six, while Delp and Ali Sheets added five apiece. Sheets also handled a heavy share of the serve-receive load, taking 19 attempts with just two errors against a St. Anthony service game that kept pressure on the Lions’ passers throughout.

Freshman Libby Huisinga logged all three sets for Marshall with a kill and five digs.

In the end, the difference was the Bulldogs’ ability to finish — Hatton’s volume at the pins and 10 service aces gave St. Anthony just enough margin to close out a match the Lions never let get away from them.
