ugh’s Two Home Runs, 11-Run Second Inning Power Marshall Past Flora 15-5
The Marshall varsity baseball team turned a remarkably patient approach at the plate and an explosive second inning into a 15-5 non-conference road victory over Flora on Saturday.
Marshall capitalized on a wild day from the Flora pitching staff, scoring 15 runs despite recording only five hits as a team. The Lions displayed incredible plate discipline and toughness, drawing nine walks and getting hit by a staggering nine pitches to constantly keep traffic on the basepaths.
The game was defined by a massive 11-run top of the second inning that blew the doors open for Marshall. Garrett Pugh was the driving force behind the Lions’ offense, launching a pair of home runs and finishing the afternoon with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Reed Ramey was equally dangerous with the bat, delivering two doubles that drove in a team-high five runs. B. Maskell proved to be a master of getting on base, scoring four times despite not registering an official hit; he reached safely in all four of his plate appearances by drawing two walks and being hit by two pitches. Max Welsh also took three pitches off the body, reflecting Marshall’s relentless ability to reach base and keep the pressure on.
Flora managed to string together eight hits in the loss, pushing across two runs in the second inning and three in the fourth to briefly stave off the mercy rule, but they could never overcome Marshall’s massive early advantage.
On the mound, Ramey earned the win for Marshall. He tossed three innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out three. Pugh showcased his versatility by entering in relief and completely shutting down the Flora attack. He pitched 2.2 hitless, scoreless innings, racking up five strikeouts to bridge the gap before Tucker Osborn secured the final out in the sixth inning to seal the win.
