The Marshall varsity baseball team engineered a dramatic late-game comeback on Friday, scoring in each of the final three innings to secure a 3-2 walk-off victory over visiting Sullivan in a tightly contested non-conference matchup.

For the first four innings, the afternoon belonged to Sullivan starting pitcher Christian Ogle. The sophomore kept Marshall’s bats completely silent, protecting a 1-0 lead that Sullivan manufactured in the top of the first inning. Ogle pitched six strong innings, striking out seven and allowing just two runs while dancing around five walks.

Sullivan doubled its advantage in the top of the fifth, pushing a run across to take a 2-0 lead. However, the deficit finally sparked Marshall’s offense.

The Lions answered in the bottom of the fifth, manufacturing their first run of the day to cut the lead in half. In the bottom of the sixth, Marshall continued to apply pressure, stringing together competitive at-bats and taking advantage of wild pitches to plate the tying run and knot the game at 2-2.

The stage was set for a dramatic seventh inning. With Sullivan turning to freshman Landon Elder in relief, Marshall’s patience paid off. The Lions loaded the basepaths, eventually forcing across the unearned, game-winning run to walk off with the 3-2 victory.

Garrett Pugh was the standout performer for Marshall, impacting the game in every facet. Pugh went 2-for-3 at the plate with two stolen bases to serve as the catalyst for the offense. Furthermore, the senior entered the game in relief on the mound and completely shut down Sullivan’s momentum. Pugh tossed the final two innings, allowing no runs and just one hit while striking out two to earn the win.

Reed Ramey kept Marshall within striking distance prior to Pugh’s entrance. The starter battled through five innings without issuing a single walk, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out three. Ramey also contributed offensively, going 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.

Sullivan’s offense was paced by Fallon Rose, who delivered a 2-for-3 performance, while Landon Elder and M. Robison each collected a hit and scored a run. Despite a clean defensive effort for most of the afternoon, a single crucial error ultimately proved costly for the visitors in the final frame.
