Mattoon Blanks Marshall 10-0 Behind Explosive Offense and One-Hit Shutout
The Mattoon varsity baseball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, pairing a relentless offensive attack with a dominant pitching performance to blank Marshall 10-0 in a six-inning non-conference matchup on Wednesday.
Mattoon set the tone immediately, striking for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The early cushion proved to be more than enough for a Mattoon pitching staff that was virtually untouchable. Though individual pitching statistics for Mattoon were not recorded, the staff combined to throw a spectacular one-hit shutout over six innings, striking out 10 Marshall batters without issuing a single walk.
Liam Keim recorded the lone hit of the afternoon for Marshall, poking a single to break up the no-hit bid. Otherwise, Marshall’s lineup struggled to find answers against Mattoon’s precise execution on the mound.
Offensively, Mattoon pounded out 12 hits and showcased impressive depth throughout their lineup. F. Gregory and Preston Walk were the primary catalysts, each delivering three hits. Gregory finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs, and a run scored. Walk also went 3-for-4, tallying a double, two RBIs, and crossing the plate twice.
Mathew Miller contributed a triple as part of a 2-for-3 performance, while A. Spracklen stayed perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. The hosts consistently added to their lead, scoring in five of the six innings to ultimately trigger the mercy rule.
For Marshall, Garrett Pugh took the loss on the mound, surrendering five earned runs over two innings of work. Shane Tarble provided a bright spot in relief, tossing two solid innings while allowing just two runs—only one of which was earned—on two hits.
The comprehensive victory highlighted Mattoon’s balanced roster, as their dominant pitching and extra-base power kept Marshall on their heels from the opening pitch.
