The Marshall varsity baseball team delivered a staggering offensive performance on Tuesday afternoon, erupting for 29 runs on 18 hits to secure a 29-3 non-conference road victory over Heritage in a four-inning, mercy-rule shortened game.

Marshall’s offense fired on all cylinders from the first pitch, capitalizing heavily on a Heritage defense that struggled through nine errors. The Lions applied relentless pressure, constantly putting the ball in play and showing great patience at the plate. They set the tone early with four runs in the top of the first inning, but it was the second frame that put the game entirely out of reach. Marshall sent batter after batter to the plate in the second, manufacturing a massive 15-run inning to build a 19-0 advantage. They added nine more runs in the third inning and a final run in the fourth.

Reed Ramey and Garrett Pugh were the main catalysts for Marshall’s historic day at the plate. Ramey was perfect in the batter’s box, going 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBIs, and four runs scored. Pugh flashed incredible power, launching a pair of home runs as part of a 2-for-4 performance that yielded four RBIs and three runs.

B. Maskell also had a phenomenal day, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI, while Shane Tarble finished 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Virtually every spot in the Marshall lineup contributed to the scoring barrage, with the team drawing four walks and being hit by seven pitches to keep the basepaths perpetually crowded.

Pugh’s dominance extended to the pitcher’s mound. The senior started the game and was practically unhittable, tossing two hitless, scoreless innings while striking out seven of the eight batters he faced. Preston Welsh followed with a perfect inning of relief, striking out two to keep Heritage’s bats silenced through the third.

Heritage showed fight in the final frame, finally breaking through for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to spoil the shutout. Kaden White delivered the lone hit of the afternoon for the hosts, an RBI single that gave the home crowd something to cheer about before the game concluded.

Despite the lopsided result, the afternoon belonged entirely to Marshall, whose overwhelming mix of power hitting and dominant starting pitching secured one of their most decisive victories of the season.
