The Arcola varsity baseball team shook off a slow start and unleashed a barrage of mid-game offense to defeat visiting Marshall 14-7 in Monday’s non-conference clash.

Marshall jumped out of the gates quickly, putting traffic on the basepaths and taking advantage of Arcola’s defensive miscues. The visitors pushed two runs across in the top of the first inning and added two more in the second, building an early 4-1 advantage that put the hosts on their heels.

However, Arcola found its rhythm in the bottom of the third inning. The hosts rallied for three runs to tie the ballgame at 4-4, shifting the momentum entirely. Arcola then took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning and effectively put the contest out of reach with a massive five-run fifth.

The Arcola lineup was a nightmare for Marshall pitching, pounding out 13 hits on the afternoon. Brevyn Whisman orchestrated the attack from the plate, delivering a brilliant 4-for-5 performance. Whisman ripped three doubles, drove in four runs, and scored three times himself. J. Griffith was equally impossible to keep off the basepaths, reaching safely in all five of his plate appearances. Griffith blasted a home run, added a double, drove in three, and crossed the plate four times to keep the line moving. Brody Phillips also served as a major catalyst for the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, four runs scored, and two stolen bases.

On the mound, Arcola utilized a trio of arms to navigate a patient Marshall lineup that drew 11 walks over seven innings. Whisman took the start, striking out six batters over three innings while allowing just two earned runs. Brody Drake entered in relief and racked up six strikeouts of his own over three innings of work, bending but not breaking against the Marshall attack. Phillips then took the ball for the seventh inning, tossing a near-spotless frame to close out the victory.

Despite the loss, Marshall showcased a gritty approach at the plate. While individual statistics were not provided for the visitors, the team tallied eight hits and capitalized on four Arcola errors to stay within striking distance early before Arcola’s bats simply took over the afternoon.
