The Marshall varsity baseball team showcased tremendous resilience on Saturday, battling back from a steep early deficit to defeat host Shelbyville 10-9 in a back-and-forth non-conference clash.

The game tested Marshall immediately. Shelbyville capitalized on early defensive miscues to hang five runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, putting the visitors in a sudden 5-0 hole. Marshall starting pitcher Liam Keim bore the brunt of the turbulent first inning, though only two of the eight runs he surrendered during his 3.1 innings of work were earned.

After three scoreless innings at the plate, Marshall’s offense finally came alive in the fourth. The Lions pushed four runs across to cut the deficit to 4-5. However, Shelbyville responded instantly in the bottom half of the frame, striking for three runs to seemingly restore order and push their advantage to 8-4.

The turning point arrived in the top of the fifth. Marshall’s lineup orchestrated a massive five-run rally, taking advantage of Shelbyville fielding errors to storm into the lead for the first time all day. Reed Dragovan (So) was on the mound for Shelbyville during the surge, but none of the five runs he allowed were earned as the defense faltered behind him.

Trailing 9-8, Shelbyville refused to fold. The hosts manufactured the tying run in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at 9-9, setting the stage for a dramatic final frame.

In the top of the seventh, Marshall delivered the decisive blow, pushing a single run across against Shelbyville reliever Collin Jones (Jr) to take a 10-9 lead.

Garrett Pugh then took charge to seal the victory. Entering in relief for the final two innings, Pugh struck out five batters and allowed just one run on one hit to earn the win. Pugh also made his presence felt at the plate, launching a solo home run to help power the offense.

Marshall’s 13-hit attack was well-distributed. Gavan Propst went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while B. Maskell finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Reed Ramey and Keim both contributed two hits and a double to the winning effort.

Shelbyville’s offense was paced by Rylan Murphy (Jr), who had a stellar 3-for-5 afternoon featuring two doubles and two runs scored. Austin Ulmer (Sr) also tallied a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double. Despite their early offensive explosion, Shelbyville ultimately fell just short against Marshall’s relentless late-game pressure.
