Massive 10-Run Fourth Inning Propels Effingham Past Marshall 15-1
A competitive ballgame unraveled quickly for the Marshall varsity baseball team on Tuesday, as host Effingham used a staggering 10-run fourth inning to secure a 15-1 non-conference victory. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Marshall actually drew first blood, manufacturing a run in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 advantage. B. Maskell sparked the offense, eventually coming around to score on an RBI off the bat of Max Welsh. However, that early lead was short-lived, as Effingham immediately responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take control.
Effingham steadily built its advantage over the next two frames, plating a single run in the second inning and two more in the third to push the score to 5-1. Marshall starting pitcher Liam Keim battled through 2.2 innings on the mound, allowing five earned runs on seven hits while striking out a pair.
The game broke wide open in the bottom of the fourth inning. Effingham’s lineup erupted for 10 runs against Marshall reliever Tucker Osborn. While Osborn struggled with command—issuing four walks and hitting two batters—he was also the victim of a costly defensive miscue. Of the 10 runs Effingham scored in the inning, only three were earned, as an error kept the door open for the home team to put the game completely out of reach. Effingham also launched a home run during the pivotal surge.
Despite the lopsided final score, Gavan Propst was a bright spot at the plate for Marshall. Propst put together a perfect 2-for-2 afternoon, ripping a double to pace the visitors’ five-hit attack. Keim, Garrett Pugh, and Maskell each chipped in with a single, and Cage Stuckey added a stolen base.
Effingham’s pitching and defense proved too much for Marshall to overcome, as the hosts played clean baseball with only one error and effectively silenced Marshall’s bats after the opening frame.
